Many novice photographers find glossy papers to be quite attractive as the prints appear to have bright and rich colors. The stylish presentation of a gloss paper photograph may dazzle everyone. Though gloss paper may be preferred for snapshots to be passed around, its use should not be extended for printing photographs which have to be framed.  The reason is that gloss papers creates reflection and shine which can obscure the image and provide glare along with the glass.

Many photographers prefer matte paper as not only does it not create reflections, it also provides better contrast in the images. Also, a good quality matte paper will show finer details better than a glossy paper.

Photographs printed on semi-gloss paper tend to be very vibrant without the added glare of glossy paper.

Another issue to be considered while buying photo print paper is that one should avoid buying artificially whitened paper. These papers are whiter than others and may look attractive but they may change color over time and thus may create subtle changes in the image. One way to check whether the paper is artificially brightened is to see it on both sides, if it is very white on the printable side but not so much on the other, then chances are that it has been artificially brightened.
